FSSAI Food Registration - Online Process, Fees, Documents Required

FSSAI, which stands for the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, is a recognized autonomous body operating under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. It is governed by the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006, with the primary goal of overseeing, registering, regulating, and granting FSSAI registration to food business operators throughout India.

FSSAI has established a comprehensive set of rules and guidelines under the Food Safety and Standards Regulations of 2011, aimed at upholding product quality. It plays a crucial role in administering food testing standards and testing protocols, all designed to mitigate contamination and unscrupulous practices within the food industry.

What is a FSSAI registration?

FSSAI registration refers to the process of registering with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), a regulatory authority responsible for ensuring food safety and quality in India. This registration is essential for food business operators, including manufacturers, processors, distributors, and even small food vendors, to comply with food safety regulations and standards.

FSSAI registration provides a unique 14-digit Food License Number to businesses, which must be displayed on food product labels. It signifies that the food business complies with the necessary hygiene and safety standards, ensuring that the food products they produce or handle are safe for consumption.

There are different types of FSSAI registration based on the size and nature of the food business, and obtaining the appropriate registration or license is mandatory to legally operate in the food industry in India.

Benefits of FSSAI Registration

Let's take a closer look at the benefits of Private Limited Company registration in India:

01Legal Compliance:

FSSAI registration is mandatory for all food business operators. It ensures that businesses operate legally and in compliance with food safety regulations, avoiding potential legal issues.

02 Consumer Trust:

Having an FSSAI registration or license enhances consumer trust in the safety and quality of your food products, as it signifies adherence to food safety standards.

03 Quality Assurance:

FSSAI standards and regulations help maintain the quality of food products, which can lead to better market acceptance and increased sales.

04 Growth in business:

FSSAI registration can be essential for business expansion, as many retailers and distributors prefer to work with registered or licensed food businesses.

05 Knowledge and Training:

FSSAI provides training and information to registered businesses, helping them stay updated on food safety practices and regulations.

Procedure of FSSAI Registration

Step-1
Online Application

Food Business Operators (FBOs) are required to apply for FSSAI registration through the Food Safety Compliance System (FoSCoS) based on the nature of their businesses. Subsequently, they need to upload all the necessary supporting documents and pay the FSSAI registration fee through the online platform. This process helps ensure compliance with food safety regulations in India.

Following a successful submission, FBOs will receive an application reference number, which can be used to monitor the progress of their application. This reference number is a valuable tool for tracking the status of the application throughout the registration process.

Step-2
Inspection by FSSAI authorities

The Food Safety Officer from FSSAI will perform a comprehensive inspection of the premises to verify that all essential compliance measures and food safety standards are being adhered to. This inspection is conducted to ensure the business's compliance with regulatory requirements and to promote food safety.

Step-3
Clearance for approval

Upon a thorough assessment of the business premise and successful verification of the submitted documents, the Food Safety Officer will grant approval for the issuance of the FSSAI registration or license to the relevant licensing authorities. This approval is a crucial step in the process of obtaining FSSAI registration or licensing.

Step-4
Issuance of license

Once the approval is granted, FSSAI will provide a distinct 14-digit numerical registration number, which must be prominently displayed during business hours and also printed on all food products as per the regulatory requirements. This unique number signifies compliance with food safety standards and is essential for product labeling.
